"Euxeinos: The Journal of the Swiss Academic Association for East European Studies" is a double-blind peer-reviewed academic journal providing a top-notch platform for interdisciplinary research on Eastern, Central Eastern and Southeastern Europe. It provides a dynamic platform for interdisciplinary research on Eastern, Central, and Southeastern Europe, fostering inclusive and collaborative dialogue on the region’s historical, cultural, political, economic, and social dimensions. The journal’s name, derived from Pontos Euxeinos ("hospitable sea"), reflects its commitment to openness and exchange.
The journal "Euxeinos" was established in 2011 by the Center for Governance and Culture in Europe as an online journal titled "Euxeinos – Governance and Culture in the Black Sea Region". Initially, it focused on the Black Sea region—comprising Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Russia, and Ukraine—and provided an interdisciplinary platform for research on governance, cultural dynamics, and regional exchange. Over time, the journal expanded both its thematic scope and institutional framework. It grew beyond its original regional focus to include Eastern, Central, and Southeastern Europe more broadly, while strengthening its interdisciplinary orientation across the humanities and social sciences. Since 2025, Euxeinos has been published by the Swiss Academic Association for East European Studies (SAEES) with the financial support of the Swiss Academic Society for Humanities and Social Sciences (SAGW), as well as the Center for Governance and Culture in Europe at the University of St. Gallen (GCE-HSG).
It offers a broad range of cutting-edge research articles and book reviews that examine the rich tapestry of Eastern, Central Eastern and Southeastern European studies from a multidisciplinary perspective. Engaging with disciplines such as political science, history, sociology, literature, arts, cultural studies, linguistics, and economics, the journal serves as an intellectual hub for scholarly exchange and critical analysis. Its mission is to enhance global understanding of the region’s evolving socio-political dynamics, historical legacies, and contemporary transformations. Each issue features scholarly contributions from international experts, including in-depth analyses and insights from guest editors. Through its open-access model, Euxeinos offers a unique platform for both established and emerging scholars to share their insights, fostering a deeper, more nuanced appreciation of Eastern, Central Eastern and Southeastern Europe's significance in the global context. The journal also aims to promote networking between scholars in Switzerland, Eastern, Central Eastern and Southeastern Europe and beyond, facilitating deeper engagement with the region's complexities.
Authors can submit individual articles, while guest editors can propose thematic sections with a maximum of five articles. The journal publishes different formats, including research articles, book reviews and features on the academic life of the Swiss Academic Association for East European Studies. Additionally, Euxeinos welcomes research articles of exceptional quality from early career researchers and MA students enrolled at Swiss universities working on, with, and from the perspective of Eastern, Central Eastern and Southeastern and Slavic studies, with all submissions reviewed by the editorial board.
The journal follows the Open Access guidelines set forth by the Principals' Conference of the Swiss Universities (swissuniversities), the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), and the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences (SAHS).
