PANEL DISCUSSION: Putin kaputt?! Russian new culture of protest (German)
The book Putin kaputt?! written by Mischa Gabowitsch offers a detailed survey on events before and after Duma elections in December 2011.
Supported by eyewitness accounts and reports of protest activists as well as by an extensive collection of blog postings and videos between Kaliningrad and Vladivostok, Paris and Seoul, the author provides a differentiated picture of societal resistance by depicting historical, political, cultural and emotional contexts of the current developments in the Russian society. Mischa Gabowitsch is empirical social researcher currently working on two research projects. His research deals with protest movement in Russia since Duma elections in 2011 and with the relevance of war memorials in the context of commemoration of World War II. In 2013 his book Putin kaputt?! was published by Suhrkamp Verlag and is the first account worldwide on Russian protest movement since 2011.

WORKSHOP: Demos-cracy for a Fragmented Polity: Considerations from Europe and Switzerland
University of St.Gallen: In an age of globalisation and a developing plethora of supranational institutions, it has become increasingly important to explore what demands of justice arise beyond the nation-state level and what political structures these demands require. Philippe Van Parijs has been focusing on these issues in relation to the European Union in a project that will culminate in a text entitled Europe’s Destiny. In this two-day workshop, he will engage a number of commentators and critics on the subject of democracy in a fragmented polity that cannot rely on a unified demos. The workshop draws together thinkers with a wide range of experience in considering this problem at both the European level and in the case of Switzerland. Through engagement with these different experiences, the workshop aims to build a better understanding of how democracy can operate in a ‘fragmented polity’.

CONFERENCE: Religion at the Borderland: Conceptualizing "Borders" through the Study of Religion
Geographical limits including national and continental borders are relevant in shaping religious behaviour and modes of thinking. Cultural and societal formations are influenced by the presence of borders whilst borderlands are concurrently altered by the ways in which individuals and communities negotiate their identities in relation to variegated notions of frontier, limit and boundedness. These issues, that have become even more poignant in light of current trends of globalization and increasing transnational flows, will be discussed during this two-day workshop. Programme.

PUBLIC LECTURES: Crossing the Curtain: Images of Europe between Integration and Segregation
