As part of the field programme, participants visited the Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ANAMA). The visit provided valuable insights into mine action and the challenges of demining, including a briefing on explosive remnants of war found in affected areas. It offered an important first-hand perspective on the humanitarian dimension of post-conflict recovery and the role of mine clearance in enabling safe reconstruction and the return of communities.
The second part of the conference took the form of a field visit across Karabakh, including Shusha, Lachin, Zangilan, Fuzuli and Aghdam. The visits provided first-hand insights into post-conflict reconstruction, infrastructure, agriculture, industrial development, smart villages and the return of communities. The field experience complemented the conference discussions and offered valuable perspectives on current developments and the future of the South Caucasus.

The Annual Conference 2026, “Security and Cooperation in the South Caucasus,” will take place from 7–12 September 2026 in Baku, Azerbaijan, bringing together researchers and experts to discuss regional security, connectivity, infrastructure, and cooperation. The programme will also include a field research trip to Karabakh, offering participants the opportunity to engage directly with the region and gain first-hand insights into current developments. The conference is organised by GCE-HSG, University of St. Gallen, in cooperation with the AIR Center, Baku.
The 2025 Annual Report is now available. It offers fresh insights into current research projects, recent publications, and ongoing developments. The report highlights a dynamic and interdisciplinary approach and a strong commitment to connecting research with teaching and public engagement.
From 2–4 February 2026, the University of St. Gallen and the University of Zurich will host an interdisciplinary workshop on HIV/AIDS. Scholars from the humanities and social sciences will explore how the epidemic is remembered, archived, and culturally represented. The workshop focuses on narratives from literature, art, history, medicine, and activism, addressing visibility, stigma, and political agency.
The Indigo project “Protests in Independent Georgia” documents civic resistance in Georgia from 1991 to 2025, highlighting social, political, and environmental activism. The project offers an interactive overview of protests, their themes, methods, and outcomes, and presents diverse perspectives on three decades of civic engagement and the impact of public mobilization.
